Man has for centuries been searching for the right combinations of shapes and designs to provide himself with the perfect domicile. In this quest the modern day intellectual Engineers and Designers seemingly have overlooked the basic laws of nature, such as heat rises and cold settles producing natural convection currents or ventilation. As we look back to previous centuries we find that the "old" transom over the door in conjunction with the heat register of many habitable areas was indeed a marriage of natural law and technological development.

Another basic of nature that seems to be overlooked is the fact that Mother nature has provided in the earth not an insulator, but an isolator. The soil temperature at a depth of ten feet (floor Level) in an earth sheltered condition is approximately 57 degrees on a year around basis. This produces an environment that requires only 15 degrees temperature increase in the living areas. This condition remains all year long and through the spring, summer, fall months cools the structure naturally. In the winter the heat required to maintain a comfortable setting is considerably less than conventional building and insulation methods where temperatures fall much lower than 57 degrees in most parts of America.

Yet another basic of nature that seems to be overlooked is geometric shapes. We tend to be drawn to the more complex shapes in nature, perhaps because of the aesthetics or it's just as simple as personal preference. The more complex a geometric shape is the more unstable it becomes. The hexagon or square are by nature more unstable than that of the triangle. The circle is by far the most common of the shapes occurring in nature. We seem to have a limited scope of the way we do things and think in straight lines, as we apply the thought of roundness a whole new world opens up to us. As we look to the simple structures in our world we find that the Eskimo builds a round Igloo, the natives of Africa, Gobi, Nepal, South Pacific Islands and even our own Native Americans, the Indians build and have built round tipis, yurts, and huts. This is not done because they are harder to build, on the contrary they are easier to build, and as a bonus the floor area in relation to the wall length is 25% - 50% greater than that of a rectangular building using the same building material.

example of shapes in comparison

If we take a conventional building that is, let's say, 62 feet wide and 150 feet long it has a footprint of 9,300 square feet, and the outer walls are 424 feet long. Taking the 424 feet lineal feet of the outer walls and stretch it into a circle, it would have a footprint of 135 feet in diameter and have 14,314 square feet. This would produce 154% the floor area of the rectangular building with the same outside wall. This translates into savings in construction, heat loss, as well as more space can be provided for the same initial investment.
